More robots than I can handle

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I never did play with Barbies. I grew up with my two older boy cousins and their friends (who I’d always beat in swimming, ha! :P) playing patintero, piko, taguan—and, yep, watching all the robots. *g* I knew them all: Daimos (oh, Richard *sigh*), Voltron, Voltes V, Bioman, Maskman, Transformers...

When I heard there was going to be a new Transformers movie, I was very skeptical. Yeah, right. *snort* How the hell are they going to do that?!? It didn’t help that, besides 300, all the movies I’ve seen so far this year disappointed me (including POTC3 *sniff*). But after seeing Transformers last night, I got to admit, I was verra, verra wrong to doubt.

With cars that whir into alien robots, superb stunt chases, shiny military thingys, action extravaganza and hot chicas who love mechanics, Transformers is a wet dream for boys. That doesn’t mean I—100% girl, I assure you!—didn’t like it. Actually, I can’t remember the last time I had soooo much fun watching a movie!

It’s all very easy to follow. There’s a planet called Cybertron ravaged by a civil war between good Autobots and the evil Decepticons. In their search for an all-powerful cube called the Allspark, they found out the uber-evil Megatron (voiced by Hugo Weaving) crashed in the Arctic some millennia ago. Enter Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf); while shopping for his first car, he ends up having this beat-up yellow Chevy Camaro that plays tunes that fit the mood LOL—which turn out to be Bumblebee—an Autobot in disguise! I tell you, forget Jude Law as Gigolo Joe, Bumblebee is just the cutest blue-eyed robot ever! :D

Michael Bay did an uber fantastic job. It’s full of wonders like the best Steven Spielberg movies (he’s on board as an exec producer), even if it’s only about an ordinary Joe championing some aliens; just like little Henry Thomas talking to a puppet. The CGI is breathtakingly BRILLIANT there’s never a moment you don’t believe it’s real. It’s big and loud with pounding music that makes me feel like I’m participating in some unbelievable crazy sex—the best kind, mind you—that it’s SPECTACULARLY AWESOME. Who cares about tiny illogicalities/inconsistencies? No one sees the robots outside Sam’s backyard? Why does Optimus Prime (voiced by Peter Cullen) has flames painted on him? Such minor details when the movie has characters quite literally gigantic. I didn’t even care that I didn’t see Josh Duhamel naked! (The only eye candy is Megan Fox. She doesn’t do it for me, unfortunately. Told ya, I’m a girl! Sheesh. :/)

If you’re looking for subtlety, this isn’t your movie. It’s all done with a wink, as ridiculous and as extravagant as possible without getting stupid. It is as goofy as it is magnificent (jaw-dropping things which I’ve never seen before in ANY other movie!) and it helps that Bay is on the joke. Seriously, otherworldly giant robots that transform into cars? LOL Bay shows his robots in hero stances with sunlight over their shoulders and Optimus talking about loyalty and freedom like he’s just stepped off a recruiting military poster. In another movie, I’ll hate it, but Transformers revels in how completely outrageous it is and it’s all the BETTER for it. Bra-vo.

So, yep, I luuuuuuve Transformers—as silly as it is. Call me a dork but I was fascinated and, oh man, GLORIOUSLY so. I actually left the theatres wanting to see a second viewing while singing, “Baby, come back...” (You’ll know what I mean when you see it. *wink*)

This transformers thing :/ Errr, I think I'll take your word for it LOL It all sounds rather like the stuff I hated when growing up and was forced to watch by my two brothers! *grrr*

Still, if I find it at the movie rental and there's nothing else I might get it :D How about that? LOL

Well good for you Mailyn, since Optimus Prime in the movie is voiced by the SAME guy that did the cartoons ;)

When Michael Bay announced they wanted the same guy (Peter Cullen) to voice Prime, die-hard Transformers fans were like "So what are you waiting for? Get him before he dies!!"

Harlot, I knew you were my kinda girl. I have watched Transformers TWICE and reading your review makes me wanna go to the cinema again! ARGH! I thought the flames on Prime looked frakking cool indeed, and if you a little bit about cars, that blue paint! Holy blingedy! Must've costed Spielberg loadsa cash, that paint alone. I'm sorry I'm a total geek.

I thought Megan Fox was aight, not annoying at least. But the hacker chick in Australian accent?? Hot hot hot.

And they did the whole 'robots talking about morals' very well didn't they? I believed every word that came out of Prime's mouth. "Were we so different?" Oh my word.. it wasn't cheesy in the least. Trust me, I know cheesy.

I lub this movie. Best summer blockbuster evah. Until the sequels comes out, of course. ;)

Ha! Ditto on the barbies. I used to cut off the hair on my little sis' barbie dolls.

Can't wait for Saturday -- didn't want to mess with the movie crowd while there's a Zara and Mango sale to go to. LOL!

Don't listen to Trollop. She used to watch that stupid Candy, Candy.

I have no barbies to behead but i used to covet my cousins three foot high robots. *sniff* They're collectibles now i think.

Mailyn, dunno what to say but that Optimus is the man. LOL

Babz,
Oh i forgot the Australian chick! Yes, hotter than the mechanic!

The bits where there are hero talk didn't bother me either. Odd. And to think they're coming from an alien robot!

The red flames shouldn't been there. Optimus doesn't have them. But would i balk about that? Of course not! I don't know why some fans are mad that the robots look different. I thought they look AWESOME.

Prime is mah daddeh and I lub the flames. It's like what people say, some bits can be translated well into a movie, some should stay in a book (Da vinci code) some should stay in the comic (Spidey 3). A friend of mine is whining day and night because Bumblebee doesn't turn into a VOLKSWAGEN BEETLE. Like why. Would you want to see a VW Beetle in a movie, in summer 2007? Meh. Sorry, I just don't get people who can't enjoy these kinda movie.

Mailyn, so didja see it? Did your knees get weak hearing that deep deep voice? lol

Babz, i know what you mean. I would have loved to see Bumblebee as a beetle (and a tiny one too LOL) but i think making him as a camaro was a good call. You know who i didn't recognize? Starscream. I think if there's something missing in the movie, it's the interaction between the Decepticons (not that i'm complaining for the lack of it :P).

LOL that was exactly what I said in my (sorta) review on ma blog ;) we need more Decepticons. I couldn't tell who was who and moreover in this movie site I frequent there are discussions going on about where did Barricade go?? I claim I saw him being killed by Ironhide, IIRC, but everybody else said 'no no no'. Now I'm confused.

I know! Nothing about the Decepticons. You won't understand what they're really into, which is which, Starscream's relationship with Megatron unexplained, etc. I suppose their scenes were the first to go when they're cutting the movie.. This is why i can't wait to get the DVD! I bet they have tons of goodies there! :D (Speaking of DVD, i'm getting 300's DVD this coming Tuesday, yayayayay!)

KISS ME YOU FOOL... i mean, uh... i agree, and stuff.

this movie is the TRUTH! i thought they did a great job of blending the comedy and serious action to get the same spirit of those classic cartoons.

and creating a movie that mixes CGI and live-action that doesn't bore me (episode I) is a great achievement.
