Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows cover

Here it is, the not so gorgeous cover art for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. I was a bit disappointed by it. I wanted more color, something with more emotion, but seeing as I’ll be getting the bloody fugly U.K. edition (is that a mustache on Harry?), how can I complain about the nice, big and illustration-filled U.S. one? *sniff*

The colorful cover for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows suggests a confrontation between the teenaged wizard-in-training and his nemesis, Lord Voldemort, but Rowling’s American editor, Arthur A. Levine, refused to shed light on speculation that Harry dies at the end. “It doesn’t look good for Harry,” Today host Meredith Vieira commented as the jacket of the book was unveiled publicly for the first time.

“We’re seeing Harry in a very interesting situation. Readers will find out exactly what the situation is,” said Levine, who admitted he cried as he read the book.

The cover jacket depicts Harry Potter on the front, looking skyward with his left palm open and raised above his head. The jacket wraps around to the back, where Lord Voldemort—a dark wizard who is so evil that characters refer to him only as “He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named”—glares at Harry menacingly with his thin, bony fingers reaching for the popular protagonist.

Scholastic has put up an interactive image here.

The U.K. editions have summaries; the inside flap reads:

Harry has been burdened with a dark, dangerous and seemingly impossible task: that of locating and destroying Voldemort’s remaining Horcruxes. Never has Harry felt so alone, or faced a future so full of shadows. But Harry must somehow find within himself the strength to complete the task he has been given. He must leave the warmth, safety, and companionship of The Burrow and follow without fear or hesitation the inexorable path laid out for him.

In this final, seventh installment of the Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling unveils in spectactular fashion the answers to the many questions that have been so eagerly awaited. The spellbinding, richly woven narrative, which plunges, twists and turns at a breathtaking pace, confirms the author as a mistress of storytelling, whose books will be read, reread and read again.

And on the back of the adult edition:

Harry is waiting in Privet Drive. The Order of the Phoenix is coming to escort him safely away without Voldemort and his supporters knowing—if they can. But what will Harry do then? How can he fulfil the momentous and seemingly impossible task that Professor Dumbledore has left him with?

Ah, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Part of me can't wait for this to come out, and then there's another part of me who never wants it to come out, so that I can live in sweet anticipation forever, especially since people keep saying that Harry and/or other people might die.

Aaaaaaaaaahhhhh!! I can already feel the book in my hands!!!

Trollop, I like this cover. I think it stands out from the rest of the previous books in the series. Harry looks older and it's colorful compare to the last 3 books which are all in one hues. I wonder what it is he's reaching for...

I CANNOT WAIT.

OMG, like the rest of the world, I can't wait. With the very important book 7 and the release of the 5th movie, I think July 2007 belongs to Harry, it should be declared as Harry Potter month!

I don't like the UK edition, it's ugly! But it does tells a lot. What's with all the treasure? Are they in Gringots or something? And is that a sword Ron is holding? Griffindor's sword?

3/29/2007 01:36:00 PM

Lily, maybe Fawkes have their wands? Speaking of Fawkes' connection with Voldemort and Harry's wands, they can't use their wands against each other right?

Where are they? In a coliseum? They look like they're conjuring something... Oh I can't wait!

"What's with all the treasure? Are they in Gringots or something? And is that a sword Ron is holding? Griffindor's sword?"

Petra, I didn't even noticed the sword! Maybe one of the horcruxes is in Gringotts. It is a perfect place to hide something very valuable... but I wonder why Voldemort would actually hide it there.

Is it just me or Harry's scar looks like it's gone?

About the sword Ron is holding, that has got to be Gryffindor's!

I'm not into orange but I love this cover. It's very different from the other HP books. Also, I think it's very fitting that Lord Voldemort would be on the back cover of the last book.

Who are those people in the shadows? Death Eaters?

I collect the US versions but I'm not crazy about this one. I don't like the orange at all. The UK version is indeed fugly, LOL, but at least that one shows some good details. Nagini is there (I assume the big snake is Nagini), so does that mean she really is a horcrux? Hogwarts too, and that means Harry will go back to Hogwarts! Yay! Even if he said in book 6 that he'll not return to the school.

Petra pointed out the gold, and I think I agree about it being at Gringotts. And the sword with Dobby. Are there really dragons in Gringotts? I can't remember! Anyway, I love Dobby!

I didn't see the the Today show so thanks for this Trollop!

Love your input ladies! Me, i just want to finally get the bloody book. Also, for any of the characters i love not to die. And if it's not too much to ask, i want to see Sirius back. Alive. *sniff* Dumbledore will always be part of Hogwarts anyway whether he's dead, alive, portrait, pot. But if he gets "reborn", fantastic then!

Speaking of Sirius, what about that veil in the Ministry of Magic? Maybe that coliseum in the background is what's inside the veil? (Well, there has got to be an explanation about that fucking veil that took Sirius away!) And the shadows are all those "dead people"? Dunno... it's that or they have to go to Rome. :/ Just saying! Geesh.

You guys started this guessing game, now I can’t wait to have the book! OK, first, why every body thinks this is the last book? There are 4 or 5 horcruxes left; JKR can write one book for each one of them, right?
Second, is she going to kill Harry in this book? So not fair, Sirius and Dumbledore were not enough? Why is she so blood thirsty? I still hope she finds a way and bring Sirius back!
Third, assuming this is the final battle and all good against evil nonsense, Harry can not kill Voldemort. He can’t use that ABRACADABRA thingy. So how is he going to face Voldemort? Is this why you all think Harry is going to die? Doesn’t he symbolize goodness? he can’t die! Good people don’t die at the end of stories, they live happily ever after! And Dobby wilding Gryffindor’s sword, Nah, I think illustrator went a little wild on British cover! How you gals stand it anyway? British version is fugly!

Aradia, i love Sirius! I didn't see any dead body (unlike Dumbledore *sniff*) so i'm still hoping here. And really, JKR has to explain that freaking magic veil!

I wonder why that Levine dude cried. I'm sure it's going to be a fantastic book but i'm beginning to worry who's going to die. :/ JRK is bloodthirsty, that witch!

About HP7 as the last Harry book, i think JKR said that after HP7, she's not going to write anymore about Harry. Which is terribly sad really. :( But it should be interesting, what she'll write about next.

3/29/2007 04:28:00 PM

Blogger Harlot said...

Oh. Aradia, just saw this from Wikipedia :P

Rowling confirmed that there isn't a university after Hogwarts and further Harry Potter books.[42]

Q: Do you think that you will write about Harry after he graduates from Hogwarts? Isn't there a University of Wizardry?

A: There's no University for Wizards. At the moment I'm only planning to write seven Harry Potter books. I won't say "never," but I have no plans to write an eighth book.

3/29/2007 04:31:00 PM

Blogger Vanessa said...

That's a good one Harlot. I want to know about the veil as well. I'm with you about wanting Sirius to come back.

I noticed in the US edition that Harry is wearing something around his neck. Is that the locket?

Blogger Aradia said...

sirius was way cuter than Dumbledore! (not in the movie due!) no, Sirius has to come back! I agree with Harlot. we didn't see a body and that veil was there for a reason!

3/29/2007 04:55:00 PM

Blogger Petra said...

Vanessa, I didn't see the locket! LOL, Aradia. Sirius is definitely cuter than Dumbledore.

According to Amazon, HP7 (US version) has 784 pages. It's shorter than OOTP (which has 896 pages)? How on earth would all of Harry's tasks be done???

3/29/2007 05:03:00 PM

Blogger Jordis Juice said...

How come Dobby is holding Gryffindor's sword? Do you think the illustrator might have made a mistake? LOL

Now that I think about it, the US version is a bit disappointing. Since we're talking of death here ("Deathly Hallows" hello?) it should have been darker. Why the orange? It does look like the sky is on fire.

I love Voldemort on the cover though.

I don't like the US edition cover, too plain and too orange-y, but the UK one has got to be one of the UGLIEST covers ever. Harry looks so un-Harry like! And look at Hermione! Is this an early April Fool's Day joke?

OMG. The book is so close now! I want to read it already!

The UK version is just ridiculous. Why are Harry, Ron and Hermione wearing different colors of robes? They look like they were falling out of a doorway. Are those dead trees or vines on the back cover on the castle grounds?

3/29/2007 06:21:00 PM

Blogger Lily Moon said...

LOL! Sirius is way cuter than Dumbledore, but I still choose Dumbledore :P. When he died, I really cried.
Rachel, I noticed the different colors of the robes too. That's as odd as Dobby wielding Gryffindor's sword.

I think Harry's scar is in there. It's just his hair is in the way where it should be :)

This is the best Harry Potter cover! Wow! The position of Harry and Voldemort's hands, as if they were doing spells even if I don't see any wands... it's excellent! The shadows in the background gives the sense that this is a fight to the death!

Compare to the US cover, the UK cover sucks, but the details are great. (my favorite UK edition cover is that of book 5) I'm not impressed though unlike the one with the US cover.

Mary GrandPre rocks! This is the best cover of all Harry Potter books.

The UK edition looks really bad. If one doesn't know it's a cover for an HP book, he wouldn't recognize it's the magical trio on the cover. Harry looks like a young Stephen King, Hermione looks like an ugly rag doll, and Ron who's a red head has sandy blond hair! I say: Ridiculous!
