A small post to tell you guys how much I enjoyed this movie. It’s a wonderful family film that will have you laughing, crying and grinning like a fool for the rest of the day.
Renée Zellweger did a great job as Beatrix Potter. She reminded me a bit of the role she played in
Bridget Jones’s Diary; maybe it was the being single and British accent thing. In any case, it made me love her all the more for it. She did look rather ugly though, I couldn’t stop thinking about that! Was it intentional?
Loved
Barbara Flynn as the crazy mother, and
Emily Watson as the even crazier friend.
Here’s the synopsis and trailer of the film:
The true story of the woman who created some of the most beloved characters in children’s literature comes to the screen in this drama leavened with elements of comedy and romance. Beatrix Potter (Renée Zellweger) is a imaginative but gently eccentric woman living in the socially and intellectually confining circumstances of Victorian England. Potter’s wealthy parents are eager for her to marry a successful man and settle down, but she has ideas of her own, and has been writing and illustrating a series of stories for children centered around a character she calls Peter Rabbit. Potter’s efforts to find a publisher for her stories prove difficult, but in time she finds a firm who agrees to give her book a chance, and Norman Warne (Ewan McGregor) is put in charge of the project. While Warne is new to the publishing game, he believes Potter has great talent and potential, and throws himself into the work with enthusiasm. A strong personal bond grows between Potter and Warne, and in time he asks her to marry him; however, Beatrix’s parents do not approve of Norman, and she is forced to choose between her mother and father and the man she loves. Norman’s sister Mille (Emily Watson) urges Beatrix to follow her heart, and she accepts Norman’s proposal, but fate has other plans.

*Sigh* *double sniff* *groan*
It is no secret to anyone that knows me, above all, those who can read, and/or have no hearing impairments, that I LOVE
Bridget Jones.
The Edge of Reason is one of my favorite books ever. The part with the little Filipino boy, the rabbits and the wooden balls, had me laughing so hard, a teacher threw me out of class in law school.** It is also no secret that, though excited at first about the Bridget column being revived by
The Independent last year, I’ve come to HATE*** this
BJ impostor almost as much as I loved the original drunk, chandelier-swinging singleton.
I have stopped religiously following the column, though every couple of months I browse through them just to make sure Bridget hasn’t been abducted by aliens, is carrying Elvis’s offspring or has come out of the closet to reveal that she is really a man that had a sex change at the age of 12 (the column has gotten so ridiculous I wouldn’t put any of these things above Fielding!).
My only comfort was that, surely, that load of bullocks Fielding’s writing now would NEVER be published as a book, tainting the greatness she’d penned before. “Honestly who would even offer to buy that manuscript?” I would arrogantly comment while roaring with laughter. “She’ll have a hard time getting anyone to read past the third chapter of that two-bit soap opera.”
Oh, but I am innocent beyond my years, dear readers, and a bit of an idiot if I might add LOL. Read this!!!!!
Bridget Jones’s Diary author Helen Fielding, who at the age of 48 is pregnant with her second child, has revealed that she is to revive everyone’s favorite singleton, Bridget Jones, in an upcoming book—the third installment in the series.
I don’t think there’s enough space in this world for me and both these Bridgets. One of us will have to be locked away in a white padded cell, and I’m thinking it will be me. After all I’ve no money, and millions of people around the world don’t adore me. *sniff* So yeah, I better get going now... So long everyone, it was nice meeting you all. *sob*
**Yes, I shamelessly sit in the back and read during school lectures.
***Helen Fielding’s brain must have been addled by motherhood or else—she’s a downright idiot trying to foister this horrid creature she claims is Bridget on her devoted fans!Labels: bitchy mcrant, me and miss jones
Once in a while, even the best authors produce a book so bad you would assume even they are embarrassed it got published under their name.
With the exception of
Paullina Simons and
Jill Barnett (each and every book of theirs I’ve read I truly enjoyed), most authors I love have written a book or two that made me wonder: What the fuck? Did he/she really write this crap???
Take Judith McNaught for example. After all these years and all the books I’ve read by different authors, Something Wonderful is still my favorite romance novel. I truly believe no romance lover should be without a McNaught book. However, as much as I’m grateful to her for creating such amazing love stories—including A Kingdom of Dreams and Paradise (where I met the man of my dreams—oh, Matt Farrell, my love *sigh*), she has books that, simply put, tarnish her name. Tender Triumph, for one, went straight to the bottom of my shelves where cobwebs flourish and dust bunnies rule, never to be seen again. (Trollop here stealing a bit of Harlot’s post to say that, Until You and Remember When should be taken out of bookstore shelves and shoved in a dark dungeon where no other unsuspecting reader will be able to find them—and suffer as I did!—while reading those two, you know—those two things!!! They were so bad I don’t even have a word awful enough to describe them!)
The same thing with Susan Elizabeth Phillips. Her “Stars/Bonners” series is definitely one of my favorites. I have high respect for this author but I have to say, Honey Moon and Glitter Baby are just not my cup of tea. They’re more of an ice cold milk you poured for yourself, but instead got globs on because its sour. :/
Linda Howard gave us After the Night, Kiss and Tell and those Mackenzie studs. But lest we forget, she also gave us one of the worst heroes ever, Rome Matthews of Sarah’s Child, the imbecilic prick who refused to accept the responsibility of a new baby because *gasp* he didn’t want to replace his dead sons! I know. Fucker.
Even the romance diva herself, Jennifer Crusie, has books I didn’t like. Granted, Faking It and Fast Women don’t actually qualify as “Books I Would Love to Burn,” but they were still a big disappointment. Nothing short of great should be penned by this woman!
Philippa Gregory, who writes fantastic historical fiction (A Queen’s Fool, The Other Boleyn Girl), ventured into writing a contemporary novel and almost got lost. That Zelda’s Cut book was so unbelievably stupid, I actually thought it was a joke! Unfortunately, it didn’t deliver its punch line; definitely doesn’t make the cut.
Then there is Helen Fielding. Incredibly funny and talented, she single-handedly created what we now know as “chick lit,” an increasingly popular fictional genre. Millions of women around the world swear by her Bridget Jones books; they have become a generational icon for singletons in every corner of the earth. And then she had to go and write Olivia Joules and the Overactive Imagination, possibly one of the worst books published in the history of literature. *shame* What a waste of time and talent—and even worse, what little appreciation Mrs. Fielding showed for her fans by cashing in on her BJD success by pimping this trash to us!
So how about you? Do you have authors you love who produced a book you truly hated? Labels: bibliophile’s affair, dame judith mcnaught, me and miss jones, romance baby, the bob and jenny show

I am absolutely, utterly and unreservedly in love with my
iPod! And no, it’s not only because of the porn Harlot send me. A big part of it is that I’m listening to the complete Harry Potter audiobook collection read by the incredibly talented
Jim Dale.
I “read” my first audiobook,
Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix, last summer while waiting for the release of book 6 and had mixed feelings about the whole listening to books trend. I found myself spacing out and missing big chunks of chapters, or I would simply wander off around my apartment, then remembering ten minutes later that I was listening to a book and would come back to be completely lost!!! Needless to say, I gave up listening to books—until a couple of weeks ago.
My experience this time around has been totally different. Jim Dale is incredibly captivating and charismatic; his voices are magnificent and the narration is wonderful. I don’t need to be told who is speaking, and it’s very easy to tell who is who when there are multiple characters in one scene (there are over ten characters in most scenes!). It’s all so seamless and perfect. He’s truly a delight to listen to. It’s a whole new experience, like reading entirely new books, even when I’ve read and re-read all the novels in this collection obsessively over the past couple of years.
I think I have been spoiled for any other audiobook reader. *sigh* I got some Nora Roberts books read by Sandra Burr, and it has to be said: listening to this woman is as much fun as watching paint dry. Her voice is very monotonous; you can’t tell which character is which because everyone talks exactly the same! I can’t help but imagine her having awful sex with a 90-year-old impotent geyser while she’s reading these novels out loud—that’s how bored she sounds!
Something similar is happening with Bridget Jones’s Diary read by Tracie Bennett. Hard to say which of these two is worse—not that I’m going to sit around and waste more time pondering it LOL.
So I ask, am I doomed forever? Will I not be able to enjoy another audiobook after Jim Dale has ruined me for every other man, er, reader, I mean? Or will our wonderful readers come to my rescue with fabulous recommendations that I can actually sit down and listen to without gagging?Labels: bibliophile’s affair, harry potter nutter, me and miss jones
People we wish would go away:◙ Tom Cruise. Because you are an over-opinionated asshole with a superiority complex (must come from being a midget). And honestly, that freaky weirdo shit behavior should only be condoned in the circus.

The View for many fans. I want Joyce to push her off the stage, so that a mob of people from the audience can beat the shit out of her.

Vicious Trollop and Bawdy Babe, real IM conversation:
Trollop: I want to blog about this week’s new Bridget column, but forgot how outraged I felt when I first read it.
Bawdy: What’s your beef with Bridget?
Trollop: Well, I hate how Fielding is projecting her married/pregnant life on Bridge. At first really hated her being pregnant, though have gotten over it a bit. But now the baby is Cleaver’s and Mark thinks it’s his?!?
Bawdy: It is??? NO!
Trollop: Is this a Spanish novela or something? Honestly it’s like a third-rate Mexican soap opera starring Thalia.
Bawdy: (Thalia sucks!) Yes, of course it is Mark’s.
Trollop: (Lord, yes! LOL Though Harlot loves her. *g*) No, it’s Cleaver’s. DNA results are back, and now Mark is being all sweet and adorable.
Bawdy: I haven’t read it but there must be a twist somewhere. It can’t be Daniel’s.
Trollop: Unless Mark and Cleaver turn out to be twin brothers separated at birth (the way this column is going I wouldn’t put it past her), there is no way it’s Mark’s.
Bawdy: No way it’s Daniel’s!
Trollop: Anyway, yes, very upset with Fielding for doing this. Why come back to ruin Bridget’s life? I think she’s doing it on purpose because now she has horrible married/child life and wants to take it out on Bridget.
Bawdy: No, she is happily married with baby. She wants it for Bridget too.
Trollop: Ha! That’s what she would have us think! Anywho, Bridget is supposed to be a singleton.
Bawdy: God, you are cynical!
Trollop: She made it okay for women to feel good about being by themselves and now she’s turned around and become fucking smug married.
Bawdy: Well that is the formula, isn’t it? HEA with ring and baby. Hate that shit.Labels: bitchy mcrant, fucking around, me and miss jones
I, like many women around the globe, religiously follow the Bridget Jones’s Diary column, which is published every Thursday in the British daily
The Independent.
Two weeks ago
The Independent’s site had technical problems, making it impossible for online readers to access the Bridget column for days. The wait, though frustrating and annoying, ended up being worth it, since true to “Fielding style,” was not only laugh out loud funny, but ended with Mark Darcy finally finding out that Bridget is pregnant and dating a younger man.
I spend every day last week expectantly awaiting the next entry (practically marking the days on the wall with a chisel, like convicts in cheesy movies). Finally came Thursday. Early in the morning I logged on to
The Independent, only to find this:
The Bridget Jones column appears on this page every Thursday and remains live for one week. She’s on holiday this week, however, and returns on 17 November.
That brings us to my question: Where is Bridget?! I mean, how can
Helen Fielding do this to us?!? What kind of selfish monster is she?!?!!
I’m practically pulling my hair out by the roots from desperation and curiosity.
*Deep breath* I hope she’s back tomorrow. If I don’t find out what happens soon, I might have to be committed to a mental institution for a long overdo stay.
